Exciting Updates on Veterinary Cancer Care

Diagnostic Tests: There are new blood tests that can be performed to screen for early cancers.

1. NU Q Cancer Screening Test - The Nu Q Cancer Screening Test measures and identifies circulating nucleosomes, which are early markers of cancer, from a simple blood test. At 97% specificity, the test has been shown to detect 77% of lymphomas and 82% of hemangiosarcomas, two of the most common cancers in dogs that comprise approximately one third of canine cancers.
2. OncoK9 - this is a liquid biopsy for suspect cancer. Next generation DNA sequencing panel performed on patient blood sample to identify genomic mutations that drive the development and progression of cancer. This test is highly sensitive for lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma and osteosarcoma. It is less sensitive but also can detect soft tissue sarcomas and mast cell tumors.

Treatment: There is a new treatment that has become availabe to help treat cancer.

Stelfonta Mast Cell Tumor Treatment -STELFONTA is indicated for all non metastatic cutaneous mast cell tumors and subcutaneous mast cell tumors located at or lower than to the elbow or the hock. Stelfonta causes destruction of tumor cells that come into direct contact with it. The result is tumor destruction with a wound remaining where the tumor was located. This wound will heal typically within 6 weeks. Importantly, 89% of treated tumor sites remained disease free at 12 months post treatment.
